Background

Algae growth in pools proceeds when a low free chlorine availability is present. The common cause being incorrect pH levels or high levels of chlorine stabiliser in the pool water. Green algae (chlorella) is the most prevalent strain in the UK. Chlorine will kill most algae but if levels are low, or the water has out of balance the growth of algae escalates. In a balanced pool with chlorine available, the algaecide supports the chlorine action by preventing growth of algae. Algaecides reduce the amount of sanitiser required, enhancing the efficacy of chlorine treatment. Small amounts of algaecide should be dosed throughout the season to prevent growth build up of algae and the subsequent problems.

Treatment & Dosing

Instructions:

  1. Ensure bathing has ceased before applying this product.
  2. Adjust pH to 7.2
  3. If algae is present prior to application it is recommended this is cleared before application. To clear the algae, shock dose with unstabilised chlorine shock.
  4. Run filtration for 24 hrs
  5. Add product directly to circulating water.
  6. Maintain pH reading between 7.2 – 7.6
  7. Bathing can resume after one full turnover of the swimming pool water, typically 4 hours.
    Dose at the rate of:
1lt of WTP C905 will treat 6700 lts (1474 gallons) of pool water to obtain 1mg/l (ppm) of copper. It is recommend to add a “top up” dose of WTP C905 around July, check copper levels with a test kit and top up with WTP C905 at 4lt per 50,000 lts when the reading has reached 0.4 mg/l (ppm) to a target reading of 1mg/l (ppm).

Testing

A Copper (WTP TK189) test kit can be used to ensure levels are satisfactory.

Handling & Disposal

  • Always ensure bathers are out of the pool when adding chemicals
  • Never mix with any other chemicals including cleaning product, weed killers and chlorine products, as a dangerous reaction may occur
  • When emptying water from the swimming pool ensure copper levels have dropped to 0.4 mg/l
