Algae growth in pools proceeds when a low free chlorine availability is present. The common cause being incorrect pH levels or high levels of chlorine stabiliser in the pool water. Green algae (chlorella) is the most prevalent strain in the UK. Chlorine will kill most algae but if levels are low, or the water has out of balance the growth of algae escalates. In a balanced pool with chlorine available, the algaecide supports the chlorine action by preventing growth of algae. Algaecides reduce the amount of sanitiser required, enhancing the efficacy of chlorine treatment. Small amounts of algaecide should be dosed throughout the season to prevent growth build up of algae and the subsequent problems.
